Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to interests of others. –Philippians 2:4
My manager at work recently asked me to do something for him. Before I agreed to do it, I jokingly asked him, what do I get out of this? What is in it for me?” He replied to me saying, “You get the joy of knowing that you did something good for someone else, isn’t that what life is all about?” Then he continued and teasingly said, “If you know what’s good for ya, you will run and get it done.” We had a good laugh and I left his office.
I did not think much of my conversation with my manager, but when I read Paul’s words in Philippians 4:2, I could not help but remember his words, “You get the joy of knowing that you did something good for someone else, isn’t that what life is all about?” What if we lived our lives with that attitude? What if we chose to ask, “What am I putting into the lives of others?”, rather than, “what am I getting out of life?” What if we chose to take the focus off ourselves and began to focus on pouring into other people? What if everyone was armed with this attitude? What if everyone looked out for the best interest of others; how different would our world be?
Jesus encourages and assures us in Matthew 6:31-33 that we do not need to worry about what we would eat, drink, or wear because our Father in Heaven already knows every single one of our needs. He then exhorts us to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all the things we need would be given to us as well.
Seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness is about loving the Lord with all of our heart, mind and soul, and to love our neighbours as ourselves. Is this the pursuit of your life? Is your life focused on loving the Lord and loving others? If it is not, then I am afraid that we have missed God’s purpose for us here on earth.
