|And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed then your light will rise in the darkness and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. –Isaiah 58:10-11
God is constantly telling us to do for others. He tells us to cloth the naked, to care for the sick, the feed the hungry, etc. As humans, I am sure the first thing that usually comes to mind is WHAT ABOUT ME!?! When we are children, we expect our parents to care for us. As young adults, we expect our friends or significant other to take care of us, as adults we look to our spouses, and when we get older, we expect our children to look after us.
God is calling us to completely go against how our human nature teaches us to be. He is calling us to give without expecting anything in return. He is asking us to love without expecting the feeling to be reciprocated. He is asking us to spend ourselves for others. Why should we give to, love and care for others who may not do the same for us? Because you are not doing it for them, Jesus tells you in Matthew 25:40 that “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Do unto and for everyone like you are doing it for God.
When you love, love like you love God. When you help others, help them as if it were God that you were helping. When you give, give as you would unto God. WHAT ABOUT ME? Never look unto others for your needs and wants because it is disrespect unto God. When you do for others like God asks you to, he takes care of you. He sends to you people that will love and care for you. You would never have to ask that question because just as you are doing unto others, he is instructing others to do unto you. God is a God of reciprocity; he will never ask you to do anything he can’t repay you for.
WHAT ABOUT HIM?
Stay blessed and spread the word.
