THE DANGER OF SUCCESS
I cared for you in the desert, in the land of burning heat. When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me. –Hosea 13:5-6

In the recent past, we have discussed brokenness and how effective a tool it can be in the life of Christians. Many may have wondered why God would want brokenness from us. Doesn’t the Bible promise that God will give all that we need; blessing, protection, children, food, joy, happiness, etc? Why would he want us to go through brokenness?

When your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of slavery. –Deuteronomy 8:13-14

When do you think about God the most? Is it when things are going well? Or is it when you are in trouble? Think about it and honestly answer the question. Scary isn’t it? The Israelites were quick to call on God when they didn’t have food, or when they were being chased down by enemies. They fasted, prayed, and offered sacrifices to God. However, whenever they were amidst blessing and prosperity, they proved least faithful to God. Instead of praising God for his faithfulness, they turned to idols, to lust, debauchery etc.

It is so sad that when we need something from God, we cry out to him day and night, we fast, we pray, we worship, etc, but the moment we get what we want, we tend to forget about Him. Does this mean that God has to keep things away from us in order to keep our attention? Does he have to leave us in want in order for us to remain faithful? He doesn’t want to, but like the Israelites, our actions can force him to do this. This is what I like to call danger of success. This danger may be the reason why God brings some of us to a season of brokenness with unanswered prayers and trials.

Look back on your life; what has success done to your relationship with Christ? Think about it!

Stay blessed and spread the word.
