Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” –Matthew 14:16
As I think about the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, I can’t help but think about the world today. The verse above was Jesus’ response to his disciple’s comment about sending the people away to buy themselves some food, eventhough they were hungry! Does this sound like you? How many friends, co-workers, etc have come to you with a spiritual hunger, and you just sent them away? Jesus instructed the disciples to divide up the little bit of food they had and feed the crowd.
“What does this have to do with us,” you ask? The world is hungry for spiritual food and Jesus is telling you today not to send them away. You may think that you don’t have enough to feed the entire world, but just like Jesus told his disciples, he is telling you to bring what you have to him (vs.18). If you bring yourself, your spirituality, your passion for Christ, etc to Jesus, he will bless it and give you immeasurably more than all you can ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within you.
“Bring them here to me,” Jesus said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the 5 loaves and 2 fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied… -(vs. 18-20)
Jesus created the food out of what they already had and he sent out the disciples to distribute it. Jesus creates salvation out of what we already have inside of us (our potential), the task of distributing it lies with you and I. You were called to feed this hungry world, and I charge you today to bring the spiritual food that you have to God and let him increase it so that you can feed the crowd.
Stay blessed and spread the word.
