PREPARE, EVEN DURING REST |
He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the Lord gave him rest. “Let us build up these towns,” he said to Judah, “and put walls around them,” with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours; because we have sought the Lord and he has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered. -2 Chronicles 14:6-7
The excerpt above encapsulates a very important message to us today. The message is simply prepare even while you are at rest. King Asa found favor with the Lord, and though there had been many wars against Judah, God gave him rest on every side for a period of time. During this period, other kings may have rejoiced and wasted away plunder from past victories, King Asa did not. Instead, he used the period of rest to rebuild the fortified cities and towns, and put walls of protection around them. He prepared for war even when there was rest.
Like King Asa, we also have to learn the secrets of a successful life. We cannot wait until a war comes to prepare; this is how nations are destroyed. We cannot wait until marriage to prepare to be good husbands and wives; this is how marriages are destroyed. We cannot wait until a test to study; this is how failure comes. We cannot wait till we have a large expense to get our finances in order; this is how debt is created. We have to learn to prepare even while we are at rest.
Anthony Robbins, an advisor to many American leaders once said, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” I completely agree with him. If we want to get different results, we have to do things differently, and there is no better time to start than while we are at rest. For example, if one had a bad experience in a relationship, during the period before the beginning of a new relationship, he/she ought to evaluate what was done wrong and plan on how to do things differently before getting into anything else. This definitely takes the weight out of waiting.
Brethren, let us learn to become proactive Christians. God longs to teach us something through every experience. It is of the utmost importance that we learn from past experiences and prepare while there is rest for better experiences. What is it that you want to accomplish in the future? I challenge you to begin preparations today. And remember, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”
Stay blessed and spread the word.
