If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had the opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country –a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. –Hebrews 11:15-16
As I look at the verse above, I think about how Abraham, Noah, Moses, and all the disciples had to leave their homes before they could get where God wanted to take them. Because of their obedience, we are told that God was not ashamed to be called their God. In fact, I’m sure that he was very proud to be called their God. So ‘what does this mean to us?’ You ask.
Although the people I mentioned in the previous paragraph had to leave their homes, they also had to leave their past behind and were willing to accept whatever life God had for them. The same way, you and I at any point in our duration here on earth may be asked to leave our homes and/or our past. Are we going to be willing? If we continue to think about what we have to give up for God, then we would be more likely to go back to it. If you had to give up a life of gambling, premarital sex, alcoholism, etc and you continued to think back to those things, you would more than likely end up going back to them. Remember the story of Lot’s wife, who was turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back.
With God, and in our Christian walks, we have to be forward thinkers. We have to continue to strain forward as we step heavenward. We have to be willing to give things up and leave them behind. We have to long for that better country, the heavenly one. God has prepared a better life for you and I. He has prepared a city for you on the streets of gold. Are you going to be willing to give everything up for it? Are you going to trust God, even though you may not be able to see or comprehend where he is taking you?
Stay blessed and spread the word.
