MY FOUNDATION: THE SOLID ROCK!
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name
On Christ the solid Rock I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

I am sure that we have all heard about the devastating earthquakes that destroyed thousands of homes and claimed even many more lives. As I watched a video footage, I saw high rise buildings literally crumble down in seconds. The news caster made a very interesting comment that stayed with me ever since. He said, “The few houses that survived these massive quakes must have been built on pretty strong foundations to survive quakes of this magnitude.”

Did you know that it is not the strength of the house, but the strength of the foundation that makes a difference? If you had a house built on a shaky foundation, and built the exact same house on solid rock, when hit with turbulent weather, the house on the solid rock would probably be the one that remained standing.

The same concept is true about us and our faith. What is your faith built on? What foundation is your life built upon? Most of us have spent most of our lives building our trust and self worth on our family’s and friend’s opinions of us. We spend years trying to morph into the person that we think they would be pleased to know. We go to school and study to enter into careers that they would be pleased with; we end up in relationships with people that they think are best for us. We hide the unhappiness, pain, and insecurities we feel because at the end of the day, we realize that we do not even like the person we have become. And when faced with a difficult situation, we crumble because we are not secure in who we are. We begin to have troubles with trusting God because we have spent so much time trusting and building our identity on other things.

What foundation is under you today dear friend? Are you still striving to earn people’s love and respect? Is your hope/trust based on what they think of you? You see, the problem with this is that it is based on things and people that are fleeting and inadequate to truly bless us; they cannot fill us up. When we fail, those things/people could very easily walk away. When we do not make decisions that they are happy with, they could leave us standing all alone, sinking deep into quick sand. But building our lives and identity on the Solid Rock that is Christ and the truth of His word gives us rest because we can stop striving to earn love! It gives us hope because His love is unconditional! It helps us to believe that God is still in control even when the world seems to be falling apart. We can trust that when we fall, He will be there to catch us and help us get back on our feet. We can be confident that although trials and tribulations may beat at us from every angle, we will remain standing because we are built securely on the infallible rock that is stronger than anything and anyone.

If Christ and the truth of His word is not the foundation that you are standing on, then I suggest you run to Him because all other ground is truly sinking sand. How can you build your house on the Solid Rock? As Jesus says in Matthew 7:24-25, ”Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Grace and peace be with you.
