How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word…I have hidden your word in my heart that I may not sin against you… With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth…I meditate in your percepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. –Psalm119: 9-16
As I read these verses this morning, I noticed something I hadn’t noticed before. These verses really teach a valuable technique that many often overlook.
First a question is posed; how can a young man keep his way pure? Many would respond by saying, a man can keep his way pure by staying away from bad company, following the commandments of God, etc. David summarizes all of these by saying; “By living according to God’s word.” God’s word is a compilation of his commandments, his instructions, his encouragements, etc. If you can live according to the word of God, you are guaranteed a life of purity and eventually a spot in the Kingdom of Heaven!
Next, how can we live according to the word of God? Hide his words in your heart so that you will not sin against Him. When you read your Bible, you should do so with an open mind as well as a receptive heart. If your heart is not into what you are reading, it would become almost impossible for you to live according to it. You would become like the man that James describes in James 1:24 ‘you would be like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.’
Lastly, when you find yourself amidst trials, recount those things that you have read and hidden in your heart, meditate on them, and consider his ways! If you do these, I can assure you that it would become easier (not easy) to overcome sin. When you have laws in your heart, they convict you. When you recount them, you renew them in your heart and mind. When you meditate on them, they guide your steps. When you delight in them, you will not neglect them!!! If you don’t believe me, try it! This method worked for David and it has worked for me as well. I urge you to test it out today!
Stay blessed and spread the word.
