O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water… -Psalm 63:1
I remember watching a cartoon, Tom and Jerry, many years ago, and in one scene, Tom had been walking in the scorching heat for several hours. When he got home, he just wanted a nice cold drink. Jerry had a glass of just that in his hands, and as soon as Tom saw it, he ran over to Jerry and began to plead for the water. Jerry pulled it away and give Tom a look as if he were asking, ‘how desperate are you? How badly do you want this?’ So Tom got down on his knees and began to beg, and then they made some sort of deal and Jerry gave Tom the water which he gobbled in less than a second.
As I read Psalm 63, I sensed the same desperation for God from David that I remember seeing in Tom for the glass of cold water. It was as though nothing else could satisfy him. He knew that God was the only person that could satisfy him in every way so he yearned for Him as if, no, because his life depended on it.
When was the last time you were desperate for something? We live in a culture where desperation has been reduced to situations like searching ten stores just to find a pair of shoes or rushing home to catch our favourite shows or favourite sports team’s game. This is not the kind of desperation I am referring to!
When was the last time you were desperate for God? Think about it. When was the last time you refused to be consoled until you heard from God or felt His presence? When was the last time you stayed up all night and said, “Lord, I am not going to let go until you bless my soul?” When was the last time you were desperate? You know, the kind of desperation that a bride feels for her bridegroom. The kind of desperation that takes you deeper in your walk with Him. The kind of desperation that produces tunnel vision for Him alone. The kind of desperation that forces you to steal away from everything and everyone just to be with Him. When?
As I read through scripture, I noticed that kind of desperation in the likes of Moses, Jacob, David, Gideon, Hannah, Elijah, Daniel, Paul, Jesus, etc. These people’s experiences were recorded for us so that we could learn from them and through endurance and the encouragement of their stories, we might have hope. Many couples will tell you that a healthy dose of desperation for one another is the secret to keeping the fire of intimacy burning in any relationship.
So again I ask you, how desperate are you for Him? If you are not that desperate, I urge you to read through Scripture often to see what He has done in the lives of others and what He has promised to do in your life. Reflect on the things He has done in your life and what He means to you. When you begin to pursue God in a desperate kind of way, your life changes! You begin to live life with purpose, passion, and an eagle-eyed vision.
I dare you to become desperate for your Bridegroom today!
Grace and peace be with you.
