|By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver costly stones, wood hay and straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. –1 Corinthians 3:10-14
In the first couple of verses in the above excerpt, Paul was referring to the foundation he laid in Corinth (not a Church as in the building, but the foundation that is the person and word of Jesus Christ), and he knew that other people would have to continue to build up on the foundation after he left.
He then goes on to warn us to be careful of how we build. In other words, be careful of what you preach and how you live. The foundation has already been laid; no one can ever change the fact of Jesus, the only thing they can do is to improperly build on him. How are you building on the foundation that was laid? Are you even building? Once you give your life to Christ, the foundation is laid, but it is up to you to build on that foundation. The amount of time and effort you spend praying, loving, giving, helping, etc are the materials that will be tested. All affairs will soon be brought into account and every man’s work will indeed be tested by fire.
When God tests your work by fire; what kind of work will be revealed? Just as fire will destroy wood, hay, and straw, but not gold, silver, and precious stones, so the work of some will be revealed as nothing on that Day. It is a sobering thought to see that some people who think they are truly serving God and doing his work are actually doing it wrongly (using unworthy materials, like a pastor once described it). What do you think the quality of your work is? How does your work compare to that of those that were called to glory in the Bible?
Are you sure that the quality of your work is going to get you into heaven? Please do not let your fate be like that of those who are BARELY saved; saved but having nothing to show for it. Guarantee your salvation today!
