I’m thinking about the Paula Cole song, “God is watching us”. I don’t know the lyrics to the entire song or why the song was written, but the chorus always jumps out at me.
I am sure we have all done things that we weren’t to proud of, being in places that we regretted going afterwards, etc. A friend of mine had one of these experiences a couple of days ago, and we were talking about it. When I asked him how he felt about the whole situation, he said that he felt bad, but “God still loves us and he always forgives us.” This is a true statement, but it is a very dangerous one to make at the same time.
We have turned God’s love and mercy into a cheap excuse to continue to sin. We have reduced his grace into something that makes us feel better when we have gone against God’s injunctions. But God is watching us and everything we do. How does that make you feel? If we say that God loves us, shouldn't we want to make him happy? What if God decides that he has had enough? When does he reach his breaking point? I think back to Sodom and Gomorrah and how God got fed up with them and decided to destroy them. We don’t know the mind of God, and we need to stop testing his patience.
God is watching us and we need to be mindful of that. Be careful about what you do. He is watching us, and we ought to always behave like he is there with us at all times. Live everyday as if God were about to reach his breaking point. Be very careful and accept God’s love and mercy as a reason not to sin instead of an excuse to sin.
Stay blessed and spread the word.
