Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. –Psalm 51:10-11
Have you ever said or heard anyone say that they had to be pure and holy before God could fill them with the Holy Spirit? I used to think like that. I used to try to fix myself before I asked God (the Holy Spirit) to inhabit me. This is a misconception that many people have. The truth however is that you really can’t become pure or holy without the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.
David committed a sin, and I am sure he wasn’t considered to be pure or holy, but his prayer said create in me a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me. God expects us to ask for the Holy Spirit to come into us to help us stop sinning and become righteous. In a series called Love Worth Finding, a preacher preached a sermon called “Clean Enough For The Holy Spirit?” In the sermon she explained that we could never be clean and pure and victorious until we were filled with the Holy Spirit of God. She also said the following; “Have you ever prayed…Dear God, if I can just prove to You that I am good enough, supernatural enough, pure enough, holy enough, good enough, then maybe, You will fill me with the Holy Spirit No, dear friend, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God because we don't have what it takes. That doesn't mean that we cling to our sin and expect God to fill us. But it does mean that the only way that we will ever be victorious over sin is to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God. Psalm 51:10 says, " Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."
Let go of sin and let the power of Holy Spirit work through you to make you pure, holy, and victorious over sin. Can we ever be clean enough for the Holy Spirit? I say that it is impossible! Instead of thinking of the Holy Spirit as something to be attained, think of it as what is truly is, a gift from God. If and when you get it, hold on to it and cherish it and if you fall like David did, pray like he did.
Stay blessed and spread the word.
