BROKENNESS
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart. O God, you will not despise. –Psalm 51:17

Have you ever gone through a period in your life when everything seemed to go wrong? Have you ever felt like you whole world was crumbling down on you, and there was nothing you could do about it? Maybe you lost your job, you were served with divorce papers, you lost a loved one to an illness, you felt all alone in the world, etc. What did your experiences do to you spiritually?

When we, Christians, face periods of darkness, we often conclude that God is punishing us for something we did, or that He has turned His back on us. Whatever the case may be, I am here to tell you today that it is during these periods of darkness that Christians experience their greatest spiritual growth. As humans, we have always been taught to use the “me, myself, and I” theory to take care of ourselves and deal with different situations that we encounter in this journey of life. God is not impressed with this! God’s word teaches us the exact opposite. He teaches us to turn to him for all our needs so that He can take care of us.

God longs for us to come to him with our problems in complete humility and brokenness. Jesus even says in Matthew 5:3 that “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” When we are poor in spirit, we are forced to our knees, we are forced back to the foot of the cross, and we are forced to render all power to God at the altar of his mercy. Vulnerability is one of God’s favourite tools to us in our lives. He is not going to battle with us for the power to handle our situations, so it is important that we remember to give up all power to him, and we sometimes have to face dark times to remind us to do this.

I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. –John 15:5. Brokenness helps us to remember that we can do nothing without Christ. I urge you today brethren to always remember that IT IS IN YOUR WEAKNESS, THAT GOD’S STRENGTH IS MADE PERFECT. It is alright to be vulnerable in Christ. It is alright for you to feel helpless, to feel alone, to feel sad, to feel empty, to feel the sentence of death, etc. All of those dark feelings are alright as long as they lead you back to the cross. Are you in a dark place today? I challenge you to walk towards the light. He is waiting for you with arms wide open!

Stay blessed and spread the word.
