To this John replied, “A man can receive only what is given to him from heaven…He must become greater; and I must become less.”-John 3:27-29
Do you hear the humility in John’s voice? Here we have a man that was preparing the way for Christ! I can only imagine how great he must have felt, to have such an important job. John’s human side was probably telling him to go around and boast about this; his friends even told him that Jesus was stealing his followers, and he needed to do something about it. But John’s reply was simply the verse above.
We ought to strive to possess the kind of humility that John had. This kind of humility only comes with reverence, genuine respect, and faith. John had faith that what happened was exactly as it was supposed to be, and he gave the heavens credit for everything he had. I am certain that God’s heart was overjoyed by this act of complete selflessness.
How many times have you exalted yourself above God? How many things have you taken credit for in your life knowing that a man can only receive what is given to him from heaven? I challenge you to let Him become greater, and you become less! Try it and see if he doesn’t exalt you.
Stay blessed and spread the word.
