ALL MY FOUNTAINS
As they make music, they will sing, “All my fountains are in You.” -Psalm 87:7

Psalm 87 was either written by the Sons of Korah or written for them. This psalm was written in honor of Zion; it was written in honor of her celebration as the “city of God.” The author wrote about how much the Lord loved Zion, mentioned prophesies about her that made her so illustrious, and wrote highly about those that were considered to be a native of the city.

I read this brief psalm, and I must confess that upon the first read, nothing really stuck out to me, so I read it again, and the last verse literally jumped off the page at me. “All my fountains are in You.” I am not sure if the author was referring to all his fountains being in the Lord or being in Zion, but for the sake of this message, I am going to refer to the subject of that verse as the Lord Himself.

What exactly does it mean to have all of our fountains in Him? When I think of a fountain, I think of something that supplies water, and water sustains. So with that in mind, I conclude that all that I need to sustain me can be found in Him. When I am sick, He can sustain me with healing, when I am hurt, He can sustain me with His comfort, when I am worried, He can sustain me with His peace, when I am tired, He can sustain me with rest, when the law condemns me, He has sustained me with grace, and so on. Do you have all of your fountains in Him?

It is easy to think of the Lord as the last resort that we go to when we have tried everything with no success. It is easy to think of Him as the person we go to when we have almost lost all hope. But the truth of the matter is that the Lord longs to be our everything. He wants to be the first person we think of when we need anything, He wants to be the first person we thank when something amazing happens; He wants us to have all of our fountains in Him. He has even assured us in Psalm 32:8 that, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.

I talked to someone about the verse, and her response was, “So you mean that when I am sick, I should go to God instead of a doctor?” The truth of the matter is that when we go to God first with all these things, He counsels us and leads us to the right doctors and give them the wisdom help, he leads us to the right Bible verses that will comfort us, He will even go as far as to lay it on our friends’ hearts to call us when we need to talk, and so on. It is of the utmost importance that we always make the Lord a forethought, rather than a last resort. Everything that we could ever need in life can be found in Him, so it behooves us to make Him our “go to Guy” for everything. And soon, as we make music, we will also be able to boldly declare that “All my fountains are in Him.

Grace and peace be with you.
