1,440 MINUTES
Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. –Psalm 90:12

I was working on a project two days ago and I took a break to have a chat with a co-worker. A few minutes into my conversation, my manager walked by and asked how the project was going. I said, “Its going well, just needed a break.” And he responded, “alright, just remember that time is money.”

As I read Psalm 90 this morning, I remembered my manager’s words, “time is money” and I began to imagine what life would be like if we thought about our time here in terms of money. I am an accountant, so I work with, look at, and think of numbers and money all day long, so please bear with me.

Imagine being given $1,440 every single day to spend on whatever you want. However, at the end of each day, you completely lose whatever portion of the money you did not use and you cannot return/exchange any of your purchases. Take heart, you will be given another $1,440 the next day, and this goes on everyday as long as you live. How would you spend your money? Would knowing that you would lose the unspent portion of your daily income make any difference? How so?

Every single day has 1,440 minutes, so in essence we are given 1,440 minutes to use as we please. However, as the clock strikes 12:0Oam a new day begins, and we are given another 1,440 minutes, but the balance from the previous day is completely gone, never to be used again. How do you spend your 1,440 minutes everyday? If we are blessed with fullness of age, we will live approximately 75 years, that is, 27,375 days, or 657,000 hours, or better yet 39,420,000 minutes. Sounds like a lot doesn’t it? It really isn’t! How much do you have left? What do you have to show for the used up balance? Countless hours spent in front of the television/internet, or invested in growing closer to the Lord? Loads of time spent being angry and unforgiving or spent on loving and caring for others? Time spent working in the office and again at home, or invested in your families and loved ones, talking, laughing, playing, and learning and growing together?

The intent of this message is certainly not to scare anyone about death or dying, but to encourage everyone to appreciate, as Moses wrote, that our days here on earth quickly pass by and to understand the importance of learning to number them aright. What does it mean to number our days? Imagine that your life is like a book, each day being a new page and each season of life being a different chapter. Sooner or later, you reach the final page that reads the seemingly dreaded phrase, “The End.” How would the book of your life read? How would you want it to read? Then I urge you to begin to write it well today!

Moses prayed that the Lord would teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Those who have learned this understand what is important in life. They understand that time is a precious gift from God and it should be spent on loving and glorifying Him, loving and caring for others, confessing and repenting, forgiving, doing better with tomorrow than they did with today, putting priorities in order, etc.

I don’t know what time it is right now in your part of the world, but at 12:00am this morning, you were given 1,440 minutes. How much of that do you have left? What are you going to do with it? I challenge you to make it count because it will be all gone at 11:59pm.

Grace and peace be with you.
